The Basics of Baccarat

Baccarat

Baccarat is one of the most popular casino games in the world. Whether it is in sticky-floor California card rooms or the tuxedo-laden casinos of Monaco, the game continues to grow in popularity with high rollers and regular players alike. This is due to a combination of factors, including the fact that it is easy to learn and maintains a low house edge. But even with this low house edge, baccarat is not without its challenges.

In the game of baccarat, you bet on either the player’s hand winning or the banker’s hand winning. If you bet on the player’s hand, you win if your number is closer to 9 than the banker’s hand. If you bet on the banker’s hand, you win if the banker’s hand is greater than the player’s hand or if the game ends in a tie.

The game is played with a shoe and the cards are dealt by a professional dealer or caller. This is a precautionary measure to eliminate cheating. In traditional baccarat, the players would take turns dealing the cards themselves. Nowadays though, most casinos want to remove any opportunity for cheating, so the dealer will deal the cards. The cards will usually be presented on a pallet or paddle. This makes the game easier for players to play online, as they do not need to handle the cards themselves and can simply click on the chips they wish to wager.

The aim of the game is to get as close to nine as possible. This is accomplished by adding up the value of your two cards. Cards numbered 1-9 are worth their face value while 10s, picture cards, and aces are worth zero points. If the total of your cards exceeds nine, the first digit is dropped to determine your score. For example, a 7 and an 8 will result in a total of 15, which is then dropped to five.

When you bet on the banker’s side, you win if the banker’s Hand is closer to 9 than the Player’s hand or if the game ends with a Tie. A winning bet on the Banker’s Hand pays out 1:1, with no commission taken by the house. In contrast, a winning bet on the Player’s Hand pays out 8:1 (minus 5% for the banker’s commission).
